18650 & Lithium-ion Battery Safety
Lithium-ion cells store a lot of energy in a small space. Handled correctly they are very safe; handled badly they can vent, catch fire or explode. Follow these rules for every 18650 and Li-ion cell.
Charging
- Use a proper Li-ion charger (such as an XTAR or Nitecore) – never a generic or nickel-battery charger.
- Do not charge cells unattended or overnight while you sleep.
- Stop charging if a cell becomes hot, swollen or smells unusual.
Storage & carrying
- Store loose cells in a plastic battery case – never loose in a pocket, bag or drawer with keys and coins.
- A short circuit across the terminals (by metal) can cause an instant fire.
- Store in a cool, dry place at around half charge for long-term storage.
Use
- Never exceed a cell’s continuous discharge rating (see our choosing guide).
- Do not mix old and new cells, or cells of different brands/charge levels, in the same device.
- Keep cells away from heat, water and children.
Damaged cells
- Retire any cell that is dented, punctured, swollen, leaking, or has a torn or missing wrap.
- A torn wrap is a real hazard – re-wrap or recycle the cell, do not keep using it.
Disposal & recycling
Never put lithium batteries in household rubbish or recycling bins – they cause truck and facility fires. Take them to a battery recycling drop-off point. In Australia, B-cycle collection points are available at many retailers.
